The leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the National Assembly has called for reassurances over the impact of proposed new casinos in Cardiff and Swansea.

Nick Bourne AM is concerned that the developments - for which the two cities were shortlisted yesterday - could have serious consequences for gambling addition.

The Casino Advisory Panel has shortlisted Cardiff for the planned new super casino which will have up to 1,250 unlimited jackpot slot machines.

Swansea has been shortlisted for one of the smaller regional casinos.

Nick Bourne AM said:

"I have grave concerns that if these casinos are built in Wales we could see an explosion in problem gambling.

"While we wish Cardiff and Swansea well in their respective bids, every effort must be made to ensure these casinos do not become a magnet for the vulnerable.

"Rhodri Morgan and his government must take a lead in ensuring safeguards are put in place to protect people who could be lured into these casinos when they can ill-afford it.

"We need a clear statement from the Assembly Government as to the implications for Wales of the Cardiff and Swansea bids - and an opportunity to discuss them in the assembly.

"While there are issues relating to urban regeneration tied to each bid, we should not be playing roulette with the well-being of vulnerable members of society.

"Given that problem gambling has increased dramatically in recent years, it is vital that we have clear criteria to judge the outcome of this pilot super casino scheme.

"It is essential that the government, both in Cardiff and at Westminster, does more to tackle the problem of online gambling and the consequences of liberalising gambling through these new casinos."
